Dwayne Johnson excitedly updated fans about the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney's "Moana" via an Instagram post on July 5. The actor, known for his role as the demigod Maui, confirmed that production is set to begin this August. Johnson also announced a new release date for the film: June 27, 2025, which is a shift from the previously planned July 10, 2026.
Johnson reshared casting details, including headshots of the actors alongside their animated counterparts, and expressed his enthusiasm about the live-action project. He highlighted the casting of newcomer Catherine Laga'aia as Moana, and the inclusion of John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala from his previous work in NBC's series "Young Rock."
In his post, Johnson wrote, "Exciting and inspiring casting news as we begin to bring together our live-action MOANA family." He reiterated his role, adding, "And yours truly, as the demigod ~ MAUI."
The actor also shared his pride in portraying Polynesian culture through the film's legends, songs, dances, and traditions. The direction of the film is in the hands of Thomas Kail, with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Disney had initially announced the cast in June.
